Some Nice Gay News

Been looking through some gay news websites (mostly the ones with funny names: Pink Paper, Gayapolis..) and of course there’s the usual depressing homophobia and human rights issues going on around the world, so here are some nice news stories on The Gay this week:

Study proves Lesbian families do “very well” without father figures [pinkpaper.com]

(btw the title of this image that I got from the story’s page is actually titled ‘daughter_and_mother’… whoops.)

Recent studies, that started in the 80s and have been following the development of a group of children raised by lesbian couples, show that the ‘lack of a male role model’ doesn’t even remotely effect the adolescences’ sense of masculinity, or any issues in gender and gender role confusion, or in fact any stress, anxiety or depression other than would be ‘present in any ‘normal’ teen’. Pretty nice news, considering this seems to be one of the main issues thrown around as reasons same-sex couples  shouldn’t be raising children. This is particularly nice news for me and my fiance of course, as we one day want to raise kids – you know, in the distant future when we all have jet packs and television that projects directly into your mind.

I haven’t actually spied any studies in gay male couples raising children as of yet, possibly because people probably aren’t as bothered about men raising children ‘too masculine’.

Hundreds of Mormon church members join Utah pride march [pinkpaper.com]

nytimes.com

Utah of course is the home of the Mormon church, and presumably you’d imagine they would object to the celebration of homosexuality parading through their home state – but everyone was pleasantly surprised when they picked up their  pride flags and joined the march, expressing their ‘unconditional love’ for the LGBT community with quotes from Mormon songs and passages.

In the last couple of years changes have been made in the Latter-day Saints Church’s attitudes towards homosexuality, mainly that ‘being gay’ is not in itself a sin, as long as gay people are staying celibate. This is similar to many Christian attitudes coming out that ‘gay is ok’ but sex before marriage is not, and because same-sex couples can’t get married, gay sex is not acceptable. At least this is smarter than quoting Leviticus repeatedly, and I don’t personally see anything wrong with people promoting celibacy if that’s what they believe is the word of their god, in comparison to hate-crimes and forcing people to ‘turn straight’. If hundreds of conservatively dressed Mormons can walk in a gay pride event and accept and celebrate love between two people of the same sex, then that brings hope that these people may realise that perhaps these two people getting married won’t be such a bad thing after all.

New anti-homophobia award named in honour of Alan Turing [pinknews.co.uk]

Alan Turing

Alan Turing, who was a code-breaking genius in the second world war and created some of the earliest designs for the computer, committed suicide in 1954 after being put on chemical and hormone treatment to ‘cure’ his homosexuality. To celebrate the 100th year since his birth, a new award for the LGF’s Homo Heroes Awards has been named after him, to be awarded to individuals or groups who have helped victims of homophobia.

Ski star admits she is a lesbian [news.com.au]

Anja Paerson

“Swedish ski star Anja Paerson revealed she had a long-term girlfriend, Filippa, and that she is expecting a baby.”

Well I have no idea who this woman is, but it’s always nice to hear about people coming out, especially those who are well-known and inspire others. Congrats to her, and her new family!
